New LNG Terminal in Alexandroupolis, Greece Faces Delay in Commercial Operations: Impact on Eastern European Gas Independence from Russia

The new LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, Greece, will begin commercial operations with a delay. It is considered a new source of gas for Eastern European countries to reduce dependence on Russian fuel.

“Due to a technical problem encountered during the launch process, commercial operations have not yet commenced,” – a spokesperson for Gastrade, which is the joint owner and operator of the airport, told LNG Prime.

“The company will announce a new launch date shortly,” a Gastrade spokesman said, but declined to give details of the breach.

The operator previously promised to start commercial operations at the end of April and deliver the next LNG carrier in May.

The Alexandroupolis LNG terminal is a floating regasification tank located in international waters and connected to the onshore infrastructure by a gas pipeline. The capacity of the building is 5.5 billion cubic meters per year. Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova announced plans to get gas through it. The latter even received small test quantities in April from a cargo delivered to Greece in mid-February. Then the tanker Gaslog Hongkong arrived in Alexandroupolis from the US.
