At the end of a day, there are often ‘residual vaccines’ in Ghent: one or more doses that are still in a bottle.

Gent –

Child carers and kindergarten teachers from Ghent better keep an extra close eye on their phone. If there are still ‘leftovers’ in Ghent at the end of a vaccination day, they can be called up from now on. A new reserve list has been set up for this purpose.

At the end of a vaccination day it may happen that there are ‘residual vaccines’. These are doses that are still in a bottle after it has been opened and the planned injections have been taken. In Ghent, it only concerns a handful of doses every day.

Until recently, however, police and firefighters were called in to ensure that nothing was lost. In the meantime, most of them have been vaccinated, which means that the City of Ghent is tapping into a different professional group. The choice fell on child carers and kindergarten teachers.

Difficult to keep your distance

There have been voices for some time to better protect child carers. In a corona outbreak in a daycare center in Ghent last month six of the nine supervisors positive and one of them was even in a coma for several weeks.

Which professions are vaccinated as a priority is a decision at Flemish level. But what happens to the ‘residual vaccines’ is up to a local government to decide.

Ghent opted for childcare workers and kindergarten teachers. They will be able to register on a new reserve list. Information about this will be provided this week to those responsible for childcare and schools in Ghent.

Qvax list

“It is very difficult for these people to keep their distance,” says Health Alderman Rudy Coddens (Forward). “They come into close contact with children, who can also be carriers of the virus. That is why we think that this group is eligible for the residual vaccines. ”

To be clear, this reserve list is separate from the Qvax list that anyone can subscribe to. This system is used during the day to fill open time slots. The child carers only receive a telephone at the end of the day, if there are ‘leftovers’.
