Scott Avy is not an ageist. It’s just trying to limit the age range of people who can use its new social media product, which is aptly called Limit App.
Limit App is intended for people between the ages of 18-25 who are looking to share photos or videos without the control of anyone outside of this targeted demographic. Instead of a secret Instagram account to keep mom from watching your social life, Limit locks down mom.
“The point is not to discriminate against anyone, but rather to provide a space where you, as a young adult, have the opportunity to make mistakes and fall without hearing in return, ‘You are a stupid millennial. ‘or whatever, ”Avy said. “And you are able to grow with your tribe during this phase.”
Background of the technology and applications: Avy, who grew up in Olympia, Washington, has always been passionate about technology and startups. He is the founder of several different companies and he spent time at Expedia and then at Nike, where he worked on the sneaker giant’s app. He is currently a senior product manager at Indeed, the job board website, and returned to Seattle from Austin during the pandemic to work remotely. Working with two developer friends, Avy is self-financing the Limit app and launched on iOS and Android last month.
New approach for social: Avy was on Instagram and Facebook and on various dating apps, but saw the opportunity to approach social differently. When Facebook was first launched, it was only available on college campuses, and access was limited to those who attended a certain college. In his opinion, Facebook got too big, and ultimately a poor experience, as he was trying to respond to everyone.
How it works: Limit App does not guarantee fake accounts so that the old don’t mix with the young. It uses a secure identity and age verification process, and when a user turns 26, that’s the end of the road on the app. This user has 30 days to download any content to back up before losing access to Limit. The application is free, with no fees or advertising.
Over 25 years: Avy isn’t too distorted to attract users, tie them to his product, and then reject them. He is adamant that Limit will never expand the 18-25 range on this particular product. He says there are plenty of other platforms that users can walk into this next phase of life. And Avy admits that Limit is already thinking about future products – like Limit 26-35 and so on to appeal to the changing interests of changing demos.
Aged from its own product: “That’s a funny question I get -” Can’t even use your app? “, Said Avy. “I am 29 years old. So it’s not for me. But you can still create things for other people, can’t you? ”
