New Law in Oman: No Mobile Phones While Driving

Muscat: Oman has tightened the law to avoid using mobile phones while driving. Royal Oman Police has advised to avoid using mobile phone to find the location or address of a place through GPS navigation while driving.

According to the police, the use of mobile phones and GPS applications such as maps will be considered a violation of the law. Experts in the field of road safety say that if there is a need to use GPS navigation, it should be set before starting the journey.

Texting, using the internet, watching videos, answering phone calls, taking photos and videos while driving is an offence. Experts say that these things are essential for safe driving.

According to Oman’s traffic laws, using mobile phones or other electronic devices while driving can result in a fine of 15 riyals and two black points. The Royal Oman Police recently announced that smart radars are being used on an experimental basis to detect violations.

These radars can detect violations such as using mobile phones, not wearing a seat belt, and changing lanes before a road signal.
