New Law in Croatia: Changes to Sunday Shopping and Working Hours for Shops and Shopping Centers

From July 1 of this year, a huge change awaits Croatian businessmen. A new law will come into effect, according to which most shops must be closed on Sundays and public holidays. Tourists also have to reckon with it. It may happen that they don’t buy.

But sellers can choose 16 Sundays in the year when they will be able to open. Shops at train or bus stations, airports, ports and ships, petrol stations, campsites, hospitals, hotels or cultural institutions will also be exempt.

“The schedules have been drawn up and the traders have decided which Sundays they will work. I think there will be no problems,” the portal quoted People President of the Trade Union of Croatia Zlatica Štuličová.

In addition, the law further stipulates that the maximum weekly working time from Monday to Saturday is 90 hours. The seller himself divides these hours into individual days. If he himself decides to open on a given week and on Sundays, the limit will be increased to 105 hours.

However, before people go shopping in Croatia, they should check that it will be open, especially on Sundays. Retail chains and shopping centers have already adjusted their working hours to the new law, the portal writes Diary.

It is important to note that many large stores plan to be open on Sundays during the summer, especially in their establishments by the sea and in popular tourist destinations. On the other hand, stores do not have to be open inland.

Supermarkets

Lidl

As of June 2, the retail chain will apply the law Lidl. The Konzum chain has also decided to adjust the opening hours of individual establishments to the tourist season and the holding of various events. In popular summer destinations, these shops will also be open on Sundays.

Although a large number of stores inland will also be open, the chain advises customers to always check the opening hours of the respective establishment at website.
