Starting this January 3, the legendary “Brooklyn Bridge” will return to its original concept: a walkway to walk freely between Manhattan and the neighboring borough, when a law is activated that prohibits the presence of vendors who had turned the narrow passage into an area chaotic and dangerous.
“It is not just a health issue, it is a public safety issue,” commented the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, quoted by ABC News. “People would have trampled each other. We need order in this city. That is one of our main milestones.”
Previously, in 2021, bicycles had already been prohibited in the pedestrian zone, by creating a special lane parallel to cars on the lower level. But that space left by the riders was taken advantage of by illegal vendors who began to offer everything from tourist merchandise to photos with live snakes circus style and alcoholic drinks.

The press complaints were echoed and finally the Municipal Council imposed the order, which came into effect today. However, the city council is still considering a bill which would allow sellers return, but in smaller quantities and staying 20 feet away from each other.
“There were a lot of vendors, taking up a lot of space and a lot of people trying to get through,” said tourist Anand Sangoi, visiting from Illinois. “It was full of people.”
Many of the providers are licensed and some are disabled veterans, who were affected when unfair competition became “too chaotic.” “Certain people pay the price to be here to do this,” one of them complained. “Certificates of authority, EIN (Employee Identification) numbers, taxes and things like that. And, you know, other people just do what they want to do.”
This suspension bridge is an icon of New York that crosses the East River linking Manhattan and Brooklyn counties., world-renowned and widely visited by residents and tourists. Opened on May 24, 1883, it was the first fixed crossing over that body of water and at the time was the longest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and a deck of 127 feet (38.7 m). m) above the average height of the water. It was officially renamed “Brooklyn Bridge” in 1915.
It has been designated a National Historic Landmark, New York City National Historic Landmark, and National Civil Engineering Landmark.
From an architectural and engineering point of view it is “an early example of a steel wire suspension bridge. It uses a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge design, with vertical and diagonal suspension cables. Its stone towers are neo-Gothic, with characteristic pointed arches“.
