New lava flows have arisen on the Canary Island of La Palma because part of the Cumbre Vieja volcano chain has collapsed. The rim on the north side of the crater collapsed yesterday.
According to authorities, lava flows through the area that had already been evacuated. Since the eruption started on September 19, about 6,000 of the total population of 83,000 have left their homes.
The lava flowing towards the west coast of the island destroyed at least four buildings yesterday. Earthquakes have also been reported again, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 4.1. The ash cloud that formed reached a height of about 3.5 kilometers.
Damage runs into hundreds of millions
Residents of homes threatened by the new lava flows were given the opportunity to remove items from their homes yesterday. Empty trucks drove into the area and returned with mattresses, furniture and other items. So far no one has been injured.
In recent weeks, lava flows on La Palma have destroyed almost 1,200 buildings and more than 150 hectares of agricultural land. The damage is estimated at around 400 million euros.
