[The Epoch Times, August 25, 2023](Reported by Epoch Times reporter Xu Zhining) Parents prepare for the fall start of school for children in grades K-12 (kindergarten to senior high school), in addition to purchasing new school supplies, figuring out the school bus time and Beyond the lines, there’s also the need to understand which vaccines are mandatory in order to be taught in New Jersey schools.
New Jersey requires all new Kindergarten students to be vaccinated against DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis), IPV (poliomyelitis), varicella (chicken pox), MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), and hepatitis B. These five vaccines are also required for children entering grades two through five. Children aged 7 years and older who have not previously received the DTaP series vaccine will need a booster dose of Tdap (three-in-one tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine). Children over the age of 10 born after 1997 must also receive the meningococcal vaccine before entering sixth grade or higher.
New Jersey allows exemptions from vaccinations for religious or medical reasons, but while a waiver is not granted or while an application is pending, students may be barred from class if they do not receive the required vaccinations in time.
Vaccination requirements vary by state across the United States and are set by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. All states require polio vaccination for new kindergarten students. Measles vaccination is required in all states except Iowa. All but a few states require the hepatitis A vaccine, but fewer than 20 states, including New Jersey, require the hepatitis B vaccine.
Measles, mumps, and rubella have been virtually eradicated for decades, according to the CDC. Nationally, the proportion of children vaccinated with the MMR vaccine has been declining year by year, from about 95% in 2019-2020 to 94% in the following year, and then to 93% in the 2021-2022 school year. About 250,000 schoolchildren across the United States have been vaccinated with MMR. ◇
