NEW YORK — A New Jersey man is behind bars after allegedly breaking into a victim’s home while she was sleeping, only to return a few hours later, all in what prosecutors say was an attempt to extort money.
The double attempted break-in occurred on August 8, at a housing development in Independence TownshipWarren County prosecutors said Wednesday.
The suspect first entered the victim’s home around 8:30 p.m. by making his way through the front door. At the time, the victim was sleeping inside the house, according to prosecutors.
The intruder allegedly demanded money from the homeowner and threatened him before fleeing. Prosecutors later said the man made additional threats and financial demands through Instagram.
Approximately three hours after the first robbery, the suspect returned to the victim’s home and tried to force his way in through the front door, but was unsuccessful the second time, prosecutors said. Instead, he allegedly spray-painted the front door with “vulgar statements” about the landlord.
Prosecutors said the victim and suspect know each other.
The suspect is being held at the Warren County Jail, where he awaits a detention hearing. He faces charges of theft, burglary, terrorist threats, cyberstalking and criminal misconduct.
