Forward Ondřej Palát contributed two assists to New Jersey’s 4-0 win over the NY Rangers in the seventh game of the first round of the NHL playoffs. Goalkeeper Akira Schmid covered all 31 shot attempts and kept the second clean sheet in the current playoffs. The Devils advanced to the second round for the first time since 2012.
Michael McLeod put New Jersey in the lead in the middle of the match, who took advantage of Ondřej Palát’s perfect work in a weakened state. While attacking, the Czech forward took the puck away from the pair of Adam Fox and Chris Kreider, skilfully dodged the goalpost and presented the puck to a free McLeod.
He himself did a great job in front of goalkeeper Igor Šestorkin. He avoided it with a backhand loop and opened the scoring with a shot into the open part of the goal.
Palat saved the second recording until the 55th minute. In the defensive zone, he pushed the puck to the onrushing Jack Hughes, who in a three-on-one renumbering charged Erik Haul, and the Finnish forward made it 3-0 with his fourth goal in the playoffs. Even before Haula, Tomáš Tatar established himself and Jasper Bratt closed the scoring with a shot into the abandoned goal.
Palat contributed five points to the Devils’ first promotion in 11 years and is New Jersey’s third most productive player in the playoffs so far.
