The family explained that the man suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and has no criminal record.

The injured man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced lifeless around 5:00 p.m., police said.
The Jersey City mayor explained Monday morning that when the police arrived they followed protocol and that after more than an hour the man, who would have had a knife, hugged them and they were forced to shoot.
“My nephew is not violent, he has never been violent, we called the crisis service,” said the aunt.
New Jersey law requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations into the death of a person that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in his or her official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. It requires all of these investigations to go before a grand jury to determine whether the evidence supports the filing of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information has been released at this time.
