Researchers at the University of Illinois have found that multiple Intel core processors are where the cores are interconnected using Ring Interconect (Ring Bus) are vulnerable to the lateral canal. These are basically all Nehalem-EX processors. The vulnerability was demonstrated on Skylake and Coffeelake processors and was named Lord of the Ring(s).
An attack process on a single core can measure latency on Ring Buswhich are affected, for example, by memory accesses of the victim from another kernel. For example, encryption keys, user-pressed keys, and other sensitive information can be detected.
It is not yet known whether AMD processors are affected by a similar problem. AMD does not use Ring Bus to connect cores, but HyperTransport a Infinity Fabrics. More information in the article.
