A new insurance requirement for lawn mowers is coming. The regulation has been in force since December 2023. This means that consumers and allotment gardeners will incur additional costs. There is now criticism, even from public authorities.

Perhaps very few people have noticed, but insurance for lawn mowers has been mandatory since December. The federal government has decided on a drastic change here. Until now, all devices could be operated without insurance. This is different now. From December 23rd, insurance must be taken out for every lawnmower. This is of course associated with additional costs. Very few gardeners will be happy about that.

From December: compulsory insurance for lawn mowers

First of all, we can reassure you: not every lawn mower is affected by the new insurance requirement. It’s all about the riding lawn mowers. Anyone who uses such a lawnmower on public roads, for example to drive into their garden or onto their property, must also insure the vehicle. There is now no longer a transition period for this, as this insurance requirement for lawn mowers will be binding from December 23rd.

Mandatory insurance for lawn mowers

All ride-on lawnmowers that can travel between six and twenty kilometers per hour are affected. In principle the same applies as for cars. The owners of these lawn mowers must insure them. There are special insurance policies for this too. Conversely, this means more costs for the owners. The special insurance for lawnmowers covers personal injuries amounting to 7.5 million euros. In addition, there is compulsory insurance and then there is also property damage of up to 1.5 million euros. Not everyone is convinced of this step.

Public criticism is loud

Criticism comes from the General Association of Insurers, or GDV for short. According to official information, there are currently no known cases in which liability insurance did not cover damages. Anyone who owns a riding lawn mower only needs to have it insured if they use it on public property. Private use is exempt from compulsory insurance for lawn mowers. Clubs and public institutions in particular that have to manage their money are often affected by this new regulation and have to expect higher expenses.
