New infections in California: bars in Los Angeles have to close again

Bars in Los Angeles were only allowed to reopen ten days ago. But given the rapidly increasing number of infections, California Governor Newsom is now turning off the taps in the second largest city in the United States.

Given the rapid rise in corona infections, California Governor Gavin Newsom has again ordered the closure of bars in Los Angeles and six other districts in the US West Coast state. In addition to Los Angeles, the bars in Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Kings, San Joaquin and Tulare have to close, as Newsom announced on Twitter.

About 13.5 million people live in the seven affected districts, which corresponds to about a third of the population of California. The bars in Los Angeles – the second largest city in the United States – had only reopened on June 19.

Restrictions were again imposed in other parts of the United States due to the continued spread of the virus. The authorities in Texas and Florida prohibited the serving of alcohol in bars. The currently most severely affected U.S. states are in the south and west of the U.S. Critics blame this for a too rapid loosening of the containment measures.

Republicans ask Trump to wear a mask

The United States is by far the worst affected country in the world by the pandemic. More than 2.5 million people contracted the new virus there, 125,000 people died. More and more voices in the country are again demanding stronger restrictions for the entire country.

Because of new record numbers of corona infections, the pressure on US President Donald Trump to set a good example and wear protective masks is increasing. Even in Trump’s own camp, voices are increasing that not only support wearing masks as protection against the virus, but also require the president to change his stance on mouthguards.

“It would be helpful if the president wore a mask from time to time,” Republican Senator Lamar Alexander told CNN. This would help get rid of the debate that “if you’re for Trump, you’re not wearing a mask, if you’re against Trump, you’re wearing one.”

Republicans who urge wearing a mask include Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Infection cases have recently risen sharply in both states.
