The government examined this April 20, during the last council of ministers held before the second round of the presidential election, a draft decree which provides for an increase in the minimum salary in the public service.
From May 1, this will be 1,649.48 euros gross monthly for full-time, against 1,607.31 euros gross monthly currently. This corresponds to an increase of 9 points of increased index (from 343 to 352 points of increased index).
In mid-March, the Minister of Transformation and the Public Service had promised, in a press release, that the minimum salary in the public service would be maintained “whatever happens” above the minimum wage. A commitment that the candidate Emmanuel Macron confirmed on April 15 on the antenna of France info.
This is to take into account the 2.65% increase in the minimum wage on 1is next May, which will bring it to 10.85 euros gross per hour and 1,645.58 euros gross monthly for full-time. Amounts which are fixed by a stopped published on April 20 in the Official Journal.
The Labor Code provides that when the national consumer price index reaches an increase of at least 2% compared to the index observed when the immediately preceding Smic was established, the Smic is “raised in the same proportion from the first day of the month following the publication of the index”. The application of this rule leads to an increase in the minimum wage of 2.65% on 1is next May, which represents about 34 euros net per month more for the lowest paid. It had already led to a first rise in the minimum wage on 1is October 2021 (+2.2%) and one second on the 1is January 2022 (+0.9%). In these two cases, the government had already chosen to raise the minimum salary of the public service, preferring this option to that of the payment of an indemnity, known as differential.
According to the government, approximately 694,000 agents of the three public services will see their remuneration increase on 1is next May, due to the raising of the minimum salary.
