New Implantable Hydrogel Nerve Electrode Offers Breakthrough Stroke Recovery Treatment- Research from China

Researchers in China have recently developed a new type of implantable hydrogel nerve electrode to improve the recovery of mice after they have suffered a stroke, a method that offers new insight into treatments using brain-computer interface technology. , informs Xinhua, according to Agerpres.

Stroke is one of the main causes of hemiplegia and motor disability. Scientists expect emerging brain-computer interface technology to achieve regulation of neuronal firing behavior, synaptic function, and brain neural circuitry while promoting recovery of damaged neurons and neural circuitry.

The team behind the new study, led by Zhang Qiang of the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, developed a new type of implantable hydrogel nerve electrode that can obtain brain information in situ and regulate brain nerves at the level of a single cell.

Asian researchers monitored nerve information in the brain for eight consecutive weeks and used photogenetic nerve tuning technology to regulate both neural circuits in the brain and limb responses.

Regulation of damaged neurons in brain areas of stroke-affected mice can effectively reduce the infarcted area of brain tissue and induce recovery of motor functions.

This technology has made progress in the design of nerve detection electrodes, nerve signal monitoring, nerve regulation and stroke treatment, as well as having application value in obtaining information about brain nerves and treating brain dysfunctions, the professor said. Zhang Qiang.

The study was published in the scientific journal Advances Materials.
