New immigration measures come into force in Cuba

The Cuban authorities reported that proposals would be implemented to improve Cuban immigration operations. This information was provided in mid-May of this year and came into force on Saturday, July 1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) reported that one of the initiatives is the extension of the validity of the passport. This document in the hands of adults aged 16 and over will be valid for 10 years.

For children between the ages of 0 and 15, the passport will be valid for 5 years. Another of the measures established is the abolition of updating the passport after 2 years.

This was a requirement established some time ago, but it is now gone.

The director of Consular Affairs, Ernesto Soberón, said that the rules also apply to previously delivered passports.

Mr. Soberón added that the extension of the permanence of Cubans abroad continues, for more than 2 years.

People who are in such a situation will not have to pay or make arrangements. Cuban citizens have had this benefit since March 2020, when the Coronavirus began to spread.

Also at this time, passports have new prices at the consulates of the largest of the Antilles.

The Cuban population aged 16 or over will pay $180.00 USD for a passport. The amount of this official document, for minors is $140.00 USD.

Passports paid for in euros will have the same value as in dollars. These rates in Europe do not show great changes, but residents in the United States appreciate a substantial reduction, since they paid $350.00 USD.

These figures do not include other expenses, such as the purchase of stamps and payments for procedures. Cubans living on the Caribbean island will continue to pay $2,500.00 CUP for the passport.

In addition, relatives of foreign origin of Cuban people will have the right to remain in Cuba for 12 months.

The modifications put into practice force Cubans who emigrated before January 1, 1971, to present their national passport when they arrive in the country.
