Salute to the miraculous achievement of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope poured in from around the world.
This state-of-the-art observatory marked its one year anniversary this summer as an innovative astronomy platform that orbits the sun some 1.6 million km from Earth. Joining the celebrations with the new James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) documentary is “Deep Sky,” a passion project that brings together IMAX Corporation with Crazy Boat Pictures Ltd. and Academy Award nominated filmmaker Nathaniel Kahn.
News of the completion of the 40-minute film was announced last week during the telescope’s “first picture” anniversary recognition event at the National Academy of Science in Washington, D.C.

Golden Globe winner Michelle Williams narrates a cinematic tribute to James Webb, which is scheduled to be shown across its network of IMAX institutional theaters sometime in October 2023.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty and enormity of space,” Williams said in an IMAX statement. “I’m excited to work with Nathaniel and IMAX to tell the story of the captivating images captured by this new telescope.”
“Deep Sky” was written, produced and directed by Nathaniel Kahn with Bonnie Hlinomaz serving as co-producer. John Turner serves as Executive Producer for IMAX, a global entertainment giant that has aligned here with financing partner Northrop Grumman Foundation, working with NASA, ESA, CSA, the Space Telescope Science Institute and the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy.
“’Deep Sky’ represents an exciting return to form for IMAX Documentaries and our long tradition of immersive space films,” said John Turner, Head of IMAX Documentaries, in an official press release. “Nathaniel Kahn’s Oscar-nominated documentary ‘My Architect’ is iconic and Emmy-winning ‘The Hunt for Planet B’ is an exciting first step in telling the story of the people who built this telescope. Now we can see stunning images brought to life in ways no one has seen before.”
This inspiring documentary explores JWST’s $10 billion engineering and construction process, its historic launch on December 25, 2021, and the release of its first full-colour, galaxy-studded image on July 12, 2022 for the entire planet to witness.
“If ever there was a subject created specifically for the IMAX screen, this is it,” says director Nathaniel Kahn. “The IMAX format allows you to appreciate the stunning resolution of NASA’s new telescope and immerse yourself in cosmic landscapes that take your breath away.”
“Deep Sky” will appear in all its large-format IMAX glory in October 2023.
