New ICE line: Weiterstadt rejects rail planning

Mayor Ralf Möller (SPD) wants to examine legal steps against the planned “Weiterstädter curve” and advocate for optimal noise protection along the railway line.

In Weiterstadt, the preferred option for the construction of the new ICE line between Frankfurt and Mannheim, presented by Deutsche Bahn a week ago, has met with little approval. Mayor Ralf Möller (SPD) reaffirmed on Thursday evening during the latest meeting of the city council that the municipality rejects the variant presented by Deutsche Bahn on November 13 during the meeting of the Rhein / Main-Rhein / Neckar participation forum, which is also a double-track curve northwest of Darmstadt between the Weiterstadt train station and the A5 motorway.

The new tracks, most of which are to be laid in a trough and a tunnel, will, according to Deutsche Bahn, use the freight trains coming from Mainz in the future to be directed to the almost 58-kilometer long new line along the A5 and A67.

According to the plans of Deutsche Bahn, the freight trains should use the Weiterstadt curve to get on the new line or vice versa.

The mayor of Weiterstadt criticized the plans primarily because the previous noise pollution in Weiterstadt, for example from the motorway and air traffic, had not been taken into account when weighing up the various route options. “That is why we will defend ourselves and examine legal steps,” said Möller, who in recent years had always campaigned for a new freight train route along the A67.
