The units will be delivered in 2026.
The Italian carrier Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC) decided to order three more before the start of operation of the new hydrogen units. He agreed to use the option with Stadler Rail, from whom he ordered the first units last June.
Last year he ordered six vehicles, this year at the beginning of the year he signed a contract for another three. The option allows to deliver six more units. Stadler Rail is the first manufacturer in the world to come up with a hydrogen drive even for narrow-gauge tracks. Another order was announced by Stadler in a press release. The same units ordered tracks in Sardinia last year.

The new units for operation on 950 mm gauge tracks are scheduled to start running in 2026. They will be manufactured at Stadler’s main plant in Bussnang.
„It is a step towards the further modernization of our operation. At the same time, we expect major modifications to the infrastructure and to the production of hydrogen,” said FdC chief Ernesto Ferraro. The sole shareholder of the company is Calabria.
The region is investing 400 million euros in the transition to hydrogen transport, including track improvements. The purchase will be financed from the National Recovery Plan.
It will be two-car units made of aluminum, between the two cars will be a powerpack with fuel cells and hydrogen tanks. The unit will measure approximately 50 meters, offer 89 places to sit and another 66 to stand. The units will be barrier-free, allowing the transport of bicycles, strollers or wheelchairs.
