New Human Species Discovered in China: No Chin, Mysterious Origins

Researchers or archaeologists in China’s ‘Bamboo Curtain Country’ have recently discovered a new human species, friends. The species was discovered by scientists who examined an ancient skull belonging to a child who lived 300,000 years ago.

From the findings published on Monday (14/8/2023) local time, this new human species is known to have no chin. The research team was shocked, because the facial features of the child’s skull did not match the Neanderthal and Denisovan lineages.

With that in mind, the researchers now conclude that these early humans came from an as yet unidentified branch.

Experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) noted that the fossils or ancient humans found were children aged 12-13 years, who lived 300,000 years ago.

Although it does not have a chin, this fossil is more similar to ancient humans in the Asian Denisovan region which became extinct 400 thousand years ago. But even so, the ancient human face is more similar to the shape of a modern human skull. So the researchers concluded that there was a new lineage that might be a branch of modern humans and lead to the Denisovans.

This combination of fossil features has also never been observed in East Asia. So this provides another estimate that modern humans appeared in the East Asia region since 300 thousand years ago.

Studies regarding the discovery of this new human species have also been published in the Journal of Human Evolution. However, researchers still need further study time to find out a more detailed understanding.

As information, researchers also explained that a mysterious creature was found in a cave located in Hualangdong in 2019. This ancient human was certainly not included in the early human Neanderthals and Denisovans.
