The Hubble Space Telescope reveals the existence of a galaxy known as UGC 11860.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA—A stunning new photo from the Space Telescope Hubble show galaxy away that hosted a recent supernova explosion. This flagship galaxy is known as UGC 11860.
UGC 11860, is located approximately 184 million light years from Earth in the constellation Pegasus. Reported from SpaceWednesday (18/7/2023), this galaxy is spiral galaxy like our own Milky Way, flaunting signature arms curving outward from its bright, dense central region.
UGC 11860 appears to be floating serenely through space in this new Hubble photo, which the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) shared on July 7. However, according to a statement from the space agency, there was recently a “very energetic stellar explosion.”
When a massive star reaches the end of its life, it dies in a dramatic explosion called a supernova. Supernovas are extremely luminous and powerful, blasting large amounts of material into space and creating an expanding shell of gas and dust that can be observed as supernova remnant.
NASA officials in the statement said the highly energetic process during the supernova explosion was largely responsible for the forging of elements between silicon and nickel on the periodic table.
“This means that understanding the influence of the mass and composition of an ancestral star system is critical to explaining how many of the chemical elements on this Earth came from,” he said
UGC 11860 observations were made in 2014, using Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3. Data from space telescopes allows astronomers to study the aftermath of star explosions and remnants left in galaxies.
Observations of supernova remnants like the one in UGC 11860 can help astronomers learn more about the star system that fueled the cosmic explosion.
