New House of Representatives: a 22-year-old, (slightly) more women and a few firsts

The new House of Representatives will soon have 22 politicians with a migration background, seven more than now. More than three quarters of the MPs have completed an academic education, the rest have continued in higher education (15 percent) or secondary education (7 percent).

Female MPs

Next week, 59 women will take up their seats. This increases the proportion of women in the House from 35 to 39 percent.

Three female newcomers have a scoop. For example, GroenLinkser Kauthar Bouchallikht becomes the first Member of Parliament to wear a headscarf. The Amsterdamse was chosen with preferential votes, just like her party colleague Lisa Westerveld and Marieke Koekkoek van Volt.

Lisa van Ginneken from D66 is the first transgender person in the House of Representatives. And Sylvana Simons is the first black female group leader of a party represented in the Chamber.

Many South Hollanders

Where do the MPs come from? Earlier it appeared from a analysis of the NOS that there were very few candidates from Drenthe, Limburg, Friesland and Noord-Brabant on the list. Relatively most candidates lived in South Holland.

The latter province is indeed overrepresented in the new House of Representatives: a third of the MPs live there. Only the fifteen seats of the CDA are not yet occupied by anyone from South Holland.
