WASHINGTON, KOMPAS.TV The United States Department of Defense posted videos and photos that appeared to have been taken independently and have gone viral on social media. The photos show the side of humanity and tenderness in the midst of tensions in the mass evacuation of tens of thousands of world citizens and Afghans to get out of the country, as reported by France24, Saturday, (21/08/2021).

A heartbreaking video showing a US combat Marine lifting a baby over a wall lined with barbed wire at Kabul’s airport caught global attention on Friday, amid chaos as thousands of people tried to flee Afghanistan’s newly-taliban control.

The video, which shows a baby in a drooping diaper, is pulled high with one hand to avoid barbed wire over a crowd of Afghans trying to enter the airport.

The photos and videos appear to have been taken independently and have taken over social media for nearly a week amid mass air evacuations of foreigners and Afghans out of Afghanistan.

The Pentagon later distributed the independently-taken video and photos to showcase the soft side of the tense evacuation, in which nearly 6,000 heavily armed US troops have taken control of the airport, while longtime foes the Taliban patrol the streets outside.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the Marines on duty were notified the unidentified baby was sick and asked to help.

“The video you’re talking about, the baby’s parents ask the Marines to look after the baby because the baby is sick,” he told reporters.

“So the Marines you saw reaching over the wall took him to the Norwegian hospital which is at the airport. They treated the child and returned the child to the child’s father,” he said.

“It was an instinctual act of compassion because there was concern about the baby.”
