In September, the “Film” master’s course will start for the first time at the ifs international film school in Cologne. The newly designed, project-related course aims to enable students to rethink film and make it fit for the future. It is important to question conventions on perspectives, content and aesthetic forms – with the aim of challenging and enriching the audience with socially relevant topics, innovative ideas and audiovisual experiences. Relevant materials are developed in interdisciplinary teams and new forms of cooperation in project work are researched. The filmmakers can expand their individually acquired subject-specific knowledge with a holistic and substantial understanding of film as a cooperative process. The German-language course is aimed at young filmmakers from audiovisual creative fields (such as direction, production, camera, editing, sound design, script, set design) with a pronounced team spirit, interest in co-creative working methods, artistic research and socially relevant topics.

Nadja Radojevic, Managing Director of the ifs:
“With the MA Film, we can now also offer a future-oriented, interdisciplinary film course at master’s level that focuses on current developments of our time. I am very pleased that with Ciro Cappellari we have gained a very versatile and committed filmmaker as a new professor who has extensive didactic experience. “

On June 1, the renowned filmmaker Ciro Cappellari will be appointed head professor for the new course at the ifs. Since studying at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB), he has worked internationally as a writer, director and cameraman. In his films he deals with topics such as social stigmatization or racism. His most important work as a director includes the feature film Sin Querer – Time of the Flamingos (1997), which won the Sundance Cinema 100 Award for Best Screenplay and was nominated for the European Film Prize. His first feature film, Hijo del Rio – The Son of the River (1995), received several international awards. Ciro Cappellari wrote and directed numerous documentaries, including In Berlin (2009) as co-director with DoP Michael Ballhaus. With Abdullah Ibrahim – A Struggle for Love (2005) he won the Adolf Grimme Prize. As a cameraman he was involved in, among other things, Pepe Danquart’s Schwarzfahrer (1992), which won the Oscar for best short film, and Vadim Glowna’s Sleeping Beauties (2006). Ciro Cappellari has been a member of the European Film Academy since 2007. In addition, he can look back on two decades of international teaching experience – most recently as a professor at CalArts – California Institute of the Arts.

Ciro Cappellari:
“To experiment openly with content and materials in order to achieve artistic goals – I would like to pass this attitude on to the students. We have to ask ourselves which stories we want or need to tell and why. And how can we expand and enrich our storytelling techniques for this? How can we see the creation of a film not only as the work of a single author, but as a common, collaborative practice? For me, these are the key questions in order to rethink film in a future-oriented way. “

In the future, the film master’s course will accept new students every two years for the winter semester. The MA film was initiated by the previous ifs managing director Simone Stewens and study director Su Nicholls-Gärtner. Ifs professors André Bendocchi-Alves, Hajo Schomerus and Peter Herrmann were also involved in the development

The application phase runs until May 19th.

On April 19 there will be an online information session. Registration under: [email protected]
