New Hampshire Gov Chris Sununu Speaks Out on Maine’s Decision to Remove Trump from 2024 Primary Ballot

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a Republican, said Maine’s decision to remove former President Trump from the 2024 primary ballot is politically motivated. And he assured that, by trying to disqualify him, they allow him to play the “victim card.”

Sununum, a frequent critic of former President Trump, said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows she was motivated to remove Trump from the ballot because of her own professional goals.

“Look, if there was any validity to keeping Trump out of the polls, we would see 48 other states trying to do the same thing,” Sununu said. “Personally, I think this is very politically motivated by the Maine Secretary of State: Trump should be on the ballot. “Everyone understands that.”

It should be remembered that Bellows became the first state official to dismiss a presidential candidate.

“This is a politician who I think has political aspirations in the future and is trying to make a name for herself,” Sununu added. “Everyone is just hoping that… the Supreme Court of the United States gets involved, overturns what Maine and Colorado are trying to do, make sure Trump is on the ballot in 50 states and let’s move forward.”

Turn Trump into a martyr

When asked if he agrees with some Republicans, such as Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie, who maintain that removing Trump from the ballot would make him a “martyr,” Sununu responded: “Of course.”

“This would just… increase his opportunity to play that victim card in the future when we get to the primaries,” he added. “It’s not helpful at all and I just don’t think it’s right.”

Sununu, who endorsed Nikki Haley in the Republican primary earlier this month, said the Supreme Court “will likely overturn both challenges” and Trump will be able to appear in all 50 states. “so Nikki Haley can beat him in all 50 states,” he said.

He acknowledged Haley’s mistake.

During the interview on “State of the Union” the governor of New Hampshire was asked about the controversy surrounding Haley’s statements about the Civil War, in which he ignored mentioning slavery as its cause.

Sununu claimed that while Haley’s initial response at an event last week was a “mistake,” she quickly cleaned up her comments and made them a “non-issue.”

“Well, look, she cleared it up quick, right? Obviously, if something needs to be clarified a little bit, you wish you would have said it a little differently the first time, but she clarified it quickly,” Sununu said. “It is an absolutely irrelevant matter. “She said, like you said, of course it was slavery.”

“I think he was talking more about the freedoms we want for all Americans and the lessons that come from that going forward. So yeah, I think he missed the obvious.”, he added. “And yes, I guess the press and the people wanted to hear her get back to the obvious about slavery. “She cleared it up right away and we all moved on.”

When the CNN journalist insisted that he clarify whether he considered Haley’s comment to be a mistake, Sununu acknowledged them: “I mean, yes. If you have to clarify an answer, you say, Wow, I guess I should have answered differently. Let’s get it straight, so yeah, sure.”.
