To celebrate the new Guy Lafitte collection at the media library and to pay tribute to the famous jazzman, an exhibition and a conference evening are organized by the Villefranche associations.

After Hugues Panassié’s collection at the media library and a jazz festival this summer, it was only a meeting with the famous jazz man Guy Lafitte to put this musical genre under the spotlight in Villefranche. It is now done.
On May 17, three Villefranche associations (USP, Ajar and Friends of the Carillon), in partnership with the town hall, are organizing a thematic evening to discover the great career of the saxophonist.

Guy Lafitte Fund

Last August, Villefranche completed its jazz collection by welcoming the works of Guy Lafitte (professional archives, objects and personal works). An initiative by Guy Foca, a jazz lover at the initiative of the Fèis Terre de Jazz, who contacted Colombe Lafitte, the wife of the deceased artist Gersois. Being a close friend of Hugues Panassié, it was only natural that his work was given to La Manufacture. From May 14 to June 29, an exhibition in honor of Guy Lafitte will be found at La Manufacture, which will show the man and his personality, his civic commitment and of course his artistic career. “He is also the first French musician to be recognized in the US and accepted in New York,” said Villefranche associations.

In contact with the greatest jazz artists in the United States

He played with the greatest: Stan Getz, Bill Coleman, Lionel Hampton. Along with Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, he participated in the soundtrack of the film “Paris-Blues” and played the scores on the saxophone. An important record of 140 records follows his rich career.
Around 1971, he abandoned music to devote himself to his sheep on his farm in Tournan, Gers, where he lived until his death in 1998, aged 71.
