BAGHDAD – After a year of political uncertainty, a new government has been formed in Iraq. The 21-member cabinet took office under the leadership of Muhammad Shia Al Sudani.
The new government was formed by the Coordination Framework, a coalition of pro-Iranian parties. The coordination framework was dominated by the resignation of all parliamentarians from the Shiite leader and the anti-Iranist party Muqtada al-Sadr.
In last year’s October elections, Muqtada al-Sadr’s party won more seats but failed to form a government. Sadr was not even ready to forge an alliance with other pro-Iranian parties. Meanwhile, Al-Sadr announced that he would leave politics.
At the same time, the unrest led by the anti-Iran faction continues. In recent days, demonstrators and police have clashed in many cities. There is also public anger at the growing corruption.
