In summer, the municipality of Magden needs significantly more water than its own groundwater well and a spring provide. The upcoming community meeting will decide on two loans in this context.

These are impressive figures that Magden’s vice-officer Ruedi Hertrich recently presented at a media briefing: “In winter, Magden’s water consumption is between 700 and 800 cubic meters per day. Last summer it was 1500 cubic meters a day. ” The main reason for the massive increase in consumption is the irrigation of private gardens and lawns. “We cannot forbid that because such a ban could not be enforced,” emphasized Hertrich.
It needs water from Rheinfelden
The water supply for the municipality of Magden draws water from a spring and the groundwater well in the Enge area. Even in normal years, the output is not sufficient in the summer months, as the groundwater well only has a concession of 900 cubic meters per day. “Last summer, the water level at the Enge groundwater well sank so low at times that only limited groundwater could be pumped,” explained Hertrich. To bridge the gap, the deficit had to be compensated for by an external purchase from the Rheinfelden water supply. Something that is necessary even in normal years. “The possible causes are unusually low groundwater levels due to persistent drought and a decrease in the specific well output due to the aging of the system,” says Hertrich.
Due to the poor condition of the well, it was renovated last year. But that’s not enough: “The exact cause and the corresponding measures should be evaluated in a variant study,” emphasized Hertrich. In principle, the municipal council wants to have an expansion / deepening of the existing well and a new, additional vertical filter well examined. At the upcoming community meeting on June 11th, the voters will decide on a planning loan of 120,000 francs for the renovation of the Enge groundwater pumping station.
310,000 francs for a new line
A second business is also about the water supply. Two transport lines run from the Enge pumping station to the water supply network. “They represent the main arteries,” explained Hertrich. In particular, the «East» transport pipeline regularly shows broken lines. Last year there were around half a dozen, as mayor André Schreyer explained. In order to guarantee security of supply, the two transport lines are to be replaced in stages over the next few years. The first line is the “East” line, for which the local council requests a credit of 310,000 francs from the assembly.
