Madeira is known as the “Flower Island” – the airport is feared even by pilots
Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 50 kilometers north of the Canary Islands. The island, which belongs to the Madeira archipelago, is part of Portugal. In total, Madeira is 57 kilometers long and 22 kilometers wide. The highest point is Pico Ruivo. The mountain is over 1,800 meters high, making it the third highest in Portugal. Madeira owes its nickname “Flower Island” to its large selection Plantwhich are considered the main attraction of the island. There is something to discover Flowers from all five continents of the world. These include, among other things, orchids, Hydrangeas and strelitzia.
However, Madeira’s airport in the capital Funchal is quite tough. Madeira – Cristiano Ronaldo Airport is one of a few airports for which pilots need special training in order to be allowed to land there. “This is quite difficult terrain and there are some challenging winds to deal with,” a captain from the low-cost airline Easyjet explained in a video on Tiktok in 2023. To make it easier for pilots on approach, the airport’s runway was extended on pillars into the sea. (jr)
