New fire in shelter in Mexico after fight between Venezuelan migrants

The difficult immigration situation in the border states of Mexico overwhelms the authorities, while the shelters that provide food, medicine and accommodation to those who seek to cross the border with the United States, accuse that they cannot sustain this situation.

The migration crisis in Mexico has triggered different public problems; among them, insecurity, death, and the social and economic burden, which falls, on many occasions, on migrant shelters and homes in the country.

A report from the National Institute of Migration (INM) explained that “among the injured is a woman who was apparently thrown from the second floor; all those affected had to be transferred to a local hospital to receive medical attention.”

According to the spokesman for the Municipal Public Security Secretariat, Adrián Sánchez, this is an abandoned building that is in deplorable conditions “but they (migrants) grabbed it to live and a different group of them arrived and wanted to get them out. From there the fight took place, there are some injured”.

During the fight, a fire started inside Channel 5, which was attended to by firefighters. Officials from the municipal police and paramedics also arrived to stop the fight and support the injured. There were no fatalities.

It is estimated that at least 70 migrants lived in this building, mostly Venezuelans. The people had been on the site for approximately three weeks, as they themselves were the ones who removed the rubble from the building to be able to enter and inhabit it.

The migrants took out their things and claimed that this happened when Mexicans attacked and robbed them, which is why the fight began.

In the state of Nuevo León, these shelters must fight daily to provide food, medicine, and lodging for travelers arriving from different Latin American countries seeking to cross the border with the United States.

Shelter workers assure that the lack of resources and government support constitute the main problem for these shelters, since far from offering solutions, the immigration authorities choose to ‘cede’ responsibility to these care homes and distance themselves from the situation.
