New Film Guide Magazine Hits Swiss Cinemas: A Modern Take on Print Media for Movie Fans

Cinema is on the rise again. The figures for the last few months speak for themselves: According to the industry association ProCinema, over 4.8 million tickets have been sold in Switzerland since the beginning of the year. This is an increase of around 40 percent compared to the previous year, which was still affected by the pandemic. And the awakening could also be clearly felt at the world’s largest film festival in Cannes, which has just ended.

For this reason, film expert and TV presenter Philipp Portmann from the Portmann Group decided to invest in a “new and modern magazine for film fans”. It will be released for the first time on June 2 in German-speaking Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland under the title Film Guide, according to a statement on Thursday. The monthly magazine is available free of charge in cinemas with a total circulation of 100,000 copies.

“We continue to believe in the unique experience of cinema, as well as in the power of a print magazine, which, today more than ever, stands out in the flood of digital media offerings,” Portmann is quoted as saying in the statement.

In addition to articles and interviews, a poster with all the film releases of the month can be found as a special service in the middle of the magazine. And everything that a print magazine can’t do, such as playing a trailer or updating the cinema program daily, is offered, initially in the German edition, via QR codes that lead to the in-house “Kinowetter” web platform. In this way, print and online should be linked and each medium should be used according to its strengths.

Experienced team on board

Jean-Pierre Gray (co-founder of the magazine film coming soon/Avant première 36 years ago) takes on the role of product manager. Carmine Carpenito becomes editor-in-chief of the German edition and Bernard Achour of the French edition. Ana von Halle, Raya AbiRached and Mathilde Bernard work as correspondents. Art Director Romano Bassi is responsible for the entire print and online appearance.

“We all love cinema every day,” Portmann continues. «This enthusiasm should be noticeable in the magazine so that people not only read it in the cinema but are also happy to take it home with them. Other people will see it there or it will even become a popular collector’s item.» (pd/cbe)
