With iPadOS 16, released to the public last month, Apple introduced a number of new features in the Files app, which allows users to manage their files just like on a PC.
The update brings more advanced options like the ability to change file extensions, view folder sizes, and more. Learn how to take advantage of the new Files app in iPadOS 16.
Files app updated on iPad with iPadOS 16
The Files app on iPad, with iPadOS 16, gets long-awaited features: for example, the interface has been updated with navigation buttons, just like in the Finder on macOS, since it is now easier to navigate between folders using the new back and forward buttons next to the folder name at the top of the screen.
Once you click the arrow next to a folder’s name, the Files app displays a list of that folder’s size, quick access to previous folders, and options to rename, copy, or move it.
There is also a Get Info button which now shows more details about the chosen folder.
The menu that appears when you press (or right-click) a file has also gotten new options. This includes easy access to Quick Actions to mark up, rotate, convert images to PDF and remove image background. Of course, Quick Actions vary depending on the file format you select.
How to change file extensions in iPadOS 16
One of the biggest changes to the Files app with iPadOS 16 is the option to change file extensions – previously, the only way to do this was using third-party apps. To change the file extension in iPadOS 16 using the Apple Files app:
Open the Files app on your iPad
Click the Organize Folders button (between the New Folder and Select buttons)
Click View Options
Enable the Show all extensions option.
Press and hold (or right-click) a file to rename it and change its extension.
In addition to improvements to the Files app, iPadOS 16 brings a number of other new features, such as Stage Manager, iCloud Shared Photo Library, Focus Filters, a new Weather app, and camera translations. .
