The many cranes stretching into the sky make it clear that there is a lot of construction going on in the north of Bern. Anyone who takes a leisurely stroll across the green Berner Allmend can see from a distance that great things are being built in the Bernexpo area, Bernexpo writes in its statement. The developer, Messepark Bern AG, and the general contractor, HRS Real Estate AG, are working closely with many companies in the region so that the opening of the New Festival Hall can take place as planned in a year’s time.
An event location for everything and everyone
The new building will consist of several main rooms: the foyer, the multifunctional stage hall as well as the cube and the deck as a congress center will create a new meeting place in the north of Bern. «We can hardly wait to present the new building to the public. Until that happens in a year, we will develop our skills as hosts parallel to the progress of the construction project and continually develop exciting event formats. The anticipation is huge,” says Bernexpo CEO Tom Winter.
In total, over 8,500 square meters of space enable meetings, congresses, cultural events, shows, trade fairs or events with a capacity of up to 9,000 people. With the upcoming multifunctional congress and event building, Bernexpo will present a large mix of uses. Regardless of whether seminars, company events or large entertainment formats are planned, any type of event can be held in the New Festhalle.
As host in the new building, Bernexpo will create moments for eternity with many planned events. “We are very much looking forward to exciting congress formats as well as events in the areas of culture and sport, about which many intensive discussions are currently being held,” says Oliver Vrieze, Chief Hospitality & Events.
Sustainable and a new meeting place
The New Festival Hall in the Minergie-P standard is a showcase object within the trade fair and event landscape in terms of energy efficiency. The new building is operated without the use of fossil fuels and has a modern photovoltaic system with an output of around 300 kWp.
A total of over 8,500 square meters of space will be created through the construction of the New Festival Hall.
44 new trees will be planted, which had to be removed from the exhibition grounds as part of the implementation. The proportion of natural areas will more than double and the planned green roofs will primarily use native plant species. In addition, a newly created outdoor area including a water feature, seating and planned catering options will ensure that the adjacent square becomes a public one
becomes a meeting place.
The construction team works excellently together and we have found a solution to every problem so far. We are pleased to be able to hand over the New Festival Hall to Bernexpo on the occasion of BEA 2025,” says Andrea Wucher, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the developer Messepark Bern AG.
Close cooperation with regional partners
The metal facade of the New Festival Hall, which will definitely attract attention, will give the Guisanplatz area a new look. Even if it seems so at first glance, the aluminum facade is not only gold-colored, but is also intended to be reminiscent of the sandstone that is part of the cityscape in Bern.
The expansion standard will be Minergie-P and is intended to be a showcase property in terms of energy efficiency.
Depending on the daylight and weather, the facade shimmers differently and more intensely. The company Bauimpuls AG from Heimberg is involved in the roofing and will install a partially accessible flat roof. But the inner values also count: In order to put the Neue Festhalle in the perfect light, Bernexpo is working with Zumtobel Licht AG. The Austrian company is responsible for the entire technical installation, while Ervotech AG takes care of the details and carries out the decorative work inside the new building.
Over the last few weeks, the massive steel beams have been assembled step by step on the construction site by Sottas AG. Another milestone in the logistically perfectly planned construction process of the New Festival Hall will soon be completed. «It is a real joy and fascinating to watch how the building grows and grows every day. Everything is on track and the new building is taking more and more shape,” says Oliver Senn, project manager for the new building at Bernexpo.
Modern stage system, large LED wall and long-standing catering partner
A state-of-the-art stage system will be installed in the Cube event room, which will be recessed at ground level and can be divided. In the Stage multifunctional hall, the stage is installed modularly according to the exact wishes of the respective event partners. This means that the organizers are guaranteed absolute flexibility at all times. The stage system is based on the Gala Systems Spiralift technology and is delivered and installed by Gilgen Logistics AG from Oberwangen.
The New Festival Hall will also have one of the most modern LED walls in the Cube event room
feature. At almost 28 meters wide and 5 meters high, the LED wall will be one of the largest in the Bern area. A sophisticated sound system ensures the best sound quality. In the area of gastronomy, Bernexpo is deepening its neighborly cooperation with Sportgastro, with which it has had a very good partnership for years. The sports gastro will be responsible for entertaining guests on various floors of the New Festival Hall and ensuring the physical well-being of those present.
Construction site tours will be carried out regularly from May onwards.
Various bars and a spacious kitchen with additional mobile units will be able to serve any type and size of event at any time and at the same time. Regardless of whether 30 guests or up to 9,000 visitors want to be catered for, the Sportgastro will fulfill every culinary request richly and professionally.
A visit to the construction site
From May onwards, Bernexpo will be offering regular construction site tours on the site, during which the guides will provide everything you need to know about the large construction project and are guaranteed to leave astonished faces with insights and facts. When exactly will the facade be installed? How high will the new event building actually be at its highest point? And what modern technology lies dormant inside the new building? These and many other questions are answered during the construction site tours.
