New on Instagram: Likes on stories
Instagram is getting one soon new function, which allows users to react to and like other people’s stories. How does the function differ from the one that already exists? Find out here.
This is what the new Like function can do
Instagram users will soon be able to Like other people’s stories and express their appreciation. The difference to the previous reaction function: When liking, you only give a heart without sending the creator of the story a DM, a direct message.
Previously, in order to react to an Insta story, users had to either share it again or reply to it with a comment or a quick reaction. The creator of the user received this reaction as direct message in his mailbox.
Now users can react to a story by using a “Like” button similar to a regular feed post that doesn’t send a DM notification to the other user.
Adam Mosserithe head of Instagram, announced that this feature is rolling out to clean up users’ inboxes.
?? Private Story Likes ??
Starting to roll out today, you can now send some love by liking people’s stories without sending a DM.
Likes on stories are private and do not have counts. Rather, they appear as hearts next to people’s handles in your Stories view sheet. ?? pic.twitter.com/l56Rmzgnnw

Differences between likes on stories and likes on feed posts
On Instagram Stories, a Like-Button displayed in the form of a heart symbol. Users can tap on it and thus express their appreciation.
But: The creator of the story will not know how many likes his story gets or who likes it, because he will not notified, as soon as another user has liked his story. He has to check that manually. This can be done in the so-called “viewer list”, where you can see who has viewed the story. Like the story itself, this data will only be available for 24 hours. Story likes will not be visible to others, meaning only you will see how many likes your story has received.
The reason Instagram doesn’t notify you of story likes is that the purpose of the feature is reduce notifications.
Impact on the algorithm?
So far it is not clear whether the likes on the algorithm whether stories with a lot of likes move up the story carousel, for example, or are more likely to be featured on the Explore Page.
