New FDA Approved Antidepressant for Postpartum Depression: Zuranolone Offers Rapid Relief

However, the US FDA yesterday approved a new promising antidepressant that works specifically against postpartum depression. It concerns zuranolone, developed by Sage and Biogen. It is a pill that the patient can take himself, for two weeks. That is much shorter than is the case with “traditional” antidepressants.

In two phase 3 clinical trials on 350 patients, zuranolone showed promising results. Depressive symptoms decreased rapidly from day 15, and in some as early as day 3. These results persisted until day 45 after testing began.
