The skyrocketing cost of gasoline has created a situation of general discontent among all Italian consumers. The families of the Bel Paese have found themselves supporting, since the beginning of 2022, a series of increases that have become almost prohibitive: first of all those concerning fuel prices, but not only, also the expensive bills and the costs of food. A topic that we have dealt with several times.
To cope with the expensive gasoline, the Government, in recent months, has decided to cut the excise duties, a decision extended several times, to help Italians pay less than two euros per liter for fuel, which had reached prices never seen before. At the time we were all waiting for one new extension, and it has arrived. We were expecting something more consistent, as had already been assumed in recent days, but unfortunately this will not be the case.

The decision taken by the Ministers on the cut in excise duties
The Ministers of the Economy, Daniele Franco, and of the Ecological Transition, Roberto Cingolani, in fact signed yesterday afternoon, a few hours ago, a decree extending the cut in excise duties – it’s true, it was what we expected – but only until next 21 August. Beyond that date it is not known whether the Executive will be able to carry out this important measure which reduces the price of petrol and diesel by 30 cents per liter, cutting the weight of excise dutiestaxes that weigh heavily on fuel costs in Italy – as we have seen on several occasions.
Considering that the previous extension was active until 2 August, the current one decided just yesterday has a duration even less than a month: only 19 days. The tax reduction will once again be applied to diesel, petrol, LPG and methane for vehicles. It is very likely that the current precarious political situation is the cause of this decision in some ways “disappointing”, and it is for this reason that the Executive has decided to postpone further extensions of the validity of the cut in excise duties to times when the situation will be more clear.
With the decision made yesterday by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Daniele Franco, and by the Minister of Ecological Transition, Roberto Cingolani, to sign the Interministerial Decree we have talked about so far, therefore the measures that still reduce the final price of fuels are have been extended until next 21 August. And that’s how fuel prices in Italy will be cut by 30 cents per liter until that date.
The previous extension
We had witnessed a similar move not even a month ago, in fact on 24 June 2022 an Interministerial Decree was signed which spoke of the reduction of excise duties for the period between 9 July and 2 August 2022. There was particular mention of the decrease in excise duties. rates of excise duty on petrol, diesel and LPG used as fuels, in addition to the exemption from excise duty and the reduction to 5% of the VAT rate for natural gas used for transport. Meanwhile, the Italians are also looking for tricks to independently save on gasoline costs.
The words of the press release
In the Press release of the Executive we read as follows: “Ministers Franco and Cingolani sign the fuel decree. Discount of 30 cents extended until August 21st. The Minister of Economy and Finance, Daniele Franco, and the Minister of Ecological Transition, Roberto Cingolani, signed the Interministerial Decree which extends the measures currently in force to reduce the final price of fuels until 21 August. Thus, the cut of 30 cents per liter for petrol, diesel, LPG and methane for transport is extended up to that date ”, the decree was signed in Rome on 19 July 2022, published at 3.15 pm.
