KOMPAS.com – A new study shows, people by level vitamin D enough in his body is likely to have risk of death lower, when hospitalized because of Covid-19.
Launch Medical News Today, research published in the journal PLOS ONE this appears to be of benefit to doctors working to reduce the Covid-19 death rate, before an effective vaccine is available.
It is important to note that this recent study has several limitations, so further research in a larger scope is needed.
If further research supports these findings, vitamin D supplements may offer a cost-effective way to limit the risk of severe Covid-19.

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine looked at blood samples from 235 patients who were hospitalized with Covid-19.
Researchers looked at the patients, starting from the results of treatment, tracking symptoms, including the severity of their infection, whether they became hypoxic (lack of oxygen), and whether they survived Covid-19.
Patients with adequate levels of vitamin D in their bodies seem to have a more protective effect corona virus.
Those with a blood level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (a precondition produced in the liver that doctors use to determine vitamin D levels) of at least 30 ng / mL have a very low chance of losing consciousness, hypoxia, or even dying.
In their blood they also showed lower levels of C-reactive protein (an inflammatory marker) and higher levels of immune cell lymphocytes.
In patients older than 40, researchers found that patients who had enough vitamin D were 51.5 percent less likely to die from Covid-19 disease, compared with those who were deficient in vitamin D.
“This study provides direct evidence that adequate vitamin D can reduce complications, including cytokine storms (the release of too much protein into the blood too quickly), and ultimately reduce the risk of dying from Covid-19,” said associated author, Dr. Michael F. Holick in a statement.
“Since vitamin D deficiency occurs in children and adults all over the world, especially in winter, it is wise for everyone to take vitamin D supplements to reduce the risk of becoming infected and experiencing Covid-19 complications.”

The good news is, vitamin D is made in our bodies when our bodies are exposed to sunlight.
People with darker skin tones need to spend more time in the sun than people with pale skin to get adequate levels of vitamin D.
In a separate study, Horlick and his team found that getting enough vitamin D can reduce the risk of contracting Covid-19 by up to 54 percent. He believes that vitamin D does provide protection against other upper respiratory tract diseases such as influenza.
“There is great concern that the combination of influenza infection and coronavirus infection could substantially increase the risk of hospitalization and death from complications from this viral infection,” said Horlick.
What’s more, recent research has found that the risk of death more than doubles in Covid-19 patients who also have the flu (influenza), so protection from vitamin D against both diseases could be of great help in the coming months.
Vitamin D It can also be found in foods including oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), red meat and eggs, and is widely available in supplement form.
