New NCCN Guidelines for Patients: Smoking cessation presents achievable and encouraging options that enable people with cancer to achieve better health outcomes.

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., November 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®)—an alliance of leading cancer centers—today announced the publication of a new patient guide designed to provide critical support and guidance to people with cancer who want to stop smoking. Continuing to smoke increases the risk of developing other cancers, reduces the effectiveness of treatment, aggravates its side effects and is associated with lower survival. The new ones NCCN® Patient Guidelines: quit smoking explains how to best use the tools that exist to help anyone quit smoking for good. Although it focuses on smoking cessation strategies for people with cancer, the information is also useful for smokers who do not have a cancer diagnosis.

«For all cancer patients who smoke at the time of diagnosis or at any other time during their illness, quitting smoking is absolutely possible. Quitting smoking earlier is better, but any time helps,” explained the doctor Peter G. Shields, of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the State University of Ohio – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Dr. Shields chairs the NCCN Oncology Clinical Practice Guidelines Panel for Quit Smoking (NCCN Guidelines®), which develops recommendations based on evidence and expert consensus for healthcare professionals. “By providing patients with the same information that doctors use, we aim to make quitting smoking a more achievable goal, even for those who have had difficulties in the past. Quitting smoking requires active work from both the patient and the healthcare professional. “These patient guidelines are critical to closing that loop and achieving the greatest success.”

The NCCN Patient Guidelines: Quitting Smoking offers a new perspective and renewed hope to those who have tried to quit smoking without success and to those who want to quit but have not yet taken the first steps. The book takes an encouraging, non-judgemental approach, recognizing that slips and lapses are common and that a combination of therapies, rather than a one-size-fits-all solution, is often the key to success. It presents multiple evidence-based options, including details on nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), behavioral therapy, and non-nicotine medications.

The NCCN Guidelines for Patients: Quit Smoking can be viewed or downloaded for free online at NCCN.org/patientguidelines or through the NCCN Patient Guides for Cancer Appthanks to the financing of the NCCN Foundation®. These NCCN Patient Guidelines are designed to engage patients actively in their own care, turning smoking cessation into a collaborative, two-way conversation between the patient and their caregivers and care team,” added Dr. Shields. “They offer easy-to-understand tools and the support needed to make this challenging journey a success.”

“People with cancer have more than enough stress in their lives,” he noted. Patrick Delaney, executive director of the NCCN Foundation. «They and their doctors focus first and foremost on treating the cancer itself. “We hope that this new patient guide can be an added resource that empowers people to recognize that they have options when it comes to quitting smoking, even while they may be focused on other medical treatments.”
