From February, Pornhub, XVideos and Stripchat must monitor much better which videos are on the site and how old users are. This is part of new European rules for large online platforms.
The rules target online platforms with more than 45 million monthly active users. For the time being, the European Commission has only labeled large tech companies such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok as such. But from next year, three major porn sites will be added.
Under the rules, sites are required, among other things, to build in systems that can confirm the age of users. The sites must also enforce much stricter measures on illegal images. For example, those involved must always give permission for published porn videos. This way the sites can stop revenge porn.
“Designating Pornhub, XVideos and Stripchat as very large platforms provides more supervision and responsibility for their algorithms,” said European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager in a response.
Enforcement of porn sites has been a problem for some time. Earlier this year, the Amsterdam court ruled that the site xHamster must remove all videos for which it does not have demonstrable permission. Complaints were received about the site from people who appeared in videos for which they had not given permission. For example, this involved revenge porn or images that had been stolen after a hack.
New legislation to curb big tech
The Digital Services Act (DSA), under which the sites will fall, is an important instrument of the European Union to curb the power of large tech companies. The new rules include limiting hate messages and the spread of disinformation.
One of the points of this law is to make the internet a safer place for children, European Commissioner Thierry Breton said on Wednesday in response to the addition of porn sites.
The EU used the new law, among other things, to launch an official investigation into Elon Musk’s social media platform X. The reason for this was the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In addition, the EU has asked TikTok and YouTube for more clarity about checking online messages.
