“New European car registration statistics reveal surge in petrol and hybrid sales, dominance of Volkswagen”

A total of 803,188 new passenger cars were registered in the European Union in April, 17.2 percent more than in the same month last year. Petrol cars remained the most popular, with a market share of 38.2 percent. Hybrid cars accounted for just under a third of sales, but the plug-in hybrid market contracted. Diesel cars accounted for a market share of 14.7 percent.

In Belgium, the number of new passenger car registrations increased by 40.4 percent to 39,872 in April. Petrol cars are still the most common in our country, with a market share of 46.6 percent. Hybrid cars are a lot less popular with us and come in at 6.6 percent, while plug-in hybrids account for almost a fifth of sales (19.5 percent). Diesel cars had a market share of 10 percent in April.

Volkswagen was by far the most popular car brand in Europe last month, with a market share of 11.4 percent, followed by Renault (6.3 percent).
