European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen says the EU will propose a ban on imports of Russian coal worth 4 billion euros annually.
The new sanctions will also include wood, cement, seafood and alcohol, with a total value of 5.5 billion euros, says the president.
The proposal must be adopted by the Union’s 27 member states.
The list of sanctions includes:
- An import ban on coal from Russia – worth 4 billion euros per year. In addition, there is an import ban on other goods, worth 5.5 billion euros a year.
- Ban on Russian ships in EU ports, and Russian transport vehicles on European roads.
- Export ban on a number of technology and machine products.
- Sanctions against four major Russian banks.
- There are also several individuals on the sanctions list.
In addition, further sanctions are being worked on. This will include oil imports.
Penalties were announced
This is the EU’s fifth sanctions package against Russia, after the country invaded Ukraine on 24 February.
New sanctions from the EU were expected this week, in response to the information it has come out of Butsja.
Ukrainian authorities say several hundred dead people have been found in mass graves. Titals dead civilians were left in the streetsafter Russian forces withdrew from the suburbs near Kyiv.
EU President Charles Michel on Sunday condemned the “atrocities” that took place in Butsja, and then announced further sanctions against Russia.
Left: Norway must follow the EU
The Liberal Party believes that Norwegian ports should also be closed to Russian ships. The party now demands that the government follow the EU.
– There are many indications that the sanctions against Russia have so far not been strong enough. There is still too much trade with Russia for us to be able to stop the flow of money to the country, says Alfred Bjørlo, parliamentary representative and member of the business committee for the Liberal Party.
