The European Parliament is one step closer to mandating that manufacturers’ batteries in phones, tablets and other devices be removable and replaceable. The European Council adopted a new regulation “strengthening the sustainability rules for batteries”. Well what does it mean?
In the news in Chip, the European Commission states that manufacturers, including Samsung, Apple and others, must adapt their hardware and designs to meet new EU regulations by 2027.
So does this mean that replaceable and removable batteries will make a comeback? Actually not exactly.
According to the EU’s recommendation, removable battery means “battery that can be removed by the end user using commercially available tools”.
In simpler terms, the European Commission is trying to make it easier for users to replace batteries, but the relevant regulations do not specify that users should be able to replace batteries without any tools. So this does not mean that we can pull out the battery from the back of the phones as in the past.
However, this decision of the European Commission seems to allow users to easily remove the batteries without applying a very special treatment to the devices. Let’s see how this step of the commission will be concluded, and as a result, what kind of design changes will brands have to make?
