New EU Regulations for Driver’s Licenses in 2023: Weight Increase, Digitization, and More

The new regulations of the European Union for the year 2023 will affect de facto every driver, whether they are only traveling within the territory of the Czech Republic or traveling abroad. And it’s good to know them.

From time to time, the European Union prepares changes that, although they concern “Europe”, but with regard to our membership, they understandably also concern us. And basically exactly the same as if they were invented by a approved by Czech legislators. Only with the difference that in this case they really apply across the board and therefore concern us, as well as Italians or Spaniards. The current ones mainly concern driver’s licenses, regular tests as well as blood alcohol levels, which are valid throughout Europe. Let’s look at it together.

Weight increase for group B as a libation for electric cars

One of the most interesting upcoming changes is an increase in the maximum permitted weight of a vehicle that can be driven with a group B driver’s license, as well as the digitization of documents. Today, drivers could who obtained a driving license after January 1, 1999, drive cars with a maximum permissible weight of 3.5 tonnes. Now this value is to be increased to 4.25 tons, provided that you have a ŘP for at least two years. Needless to say, what was the likely cause of this change: some electric SUVs over 3.5 tons tip quite easily.

And it wouldn’t be the European Union if it didn’t adapt to this nonsensical concept of “ecology on four wheels” in the simplest way. In short, by raising the limit for group B. So far it was 3.5 tons without sufficient problems and exceeding happened in exceptional cases, but even that is not enough. Instead of striving for truly rational personal (electric) mobility, saving weight and, as a result, the size of the battery (and therefore ecology), we will legalize the opposite extreme. How Brussels.

Digitization of driver’s licenses should be a matter of course

The digitalization of the driver’s license is part of the proposed changes. The digital driver’s license could thus be given a second chance: the aim is that in the event of a police check or when renting a car all that was needed was the corresponding app on the smartphone. A QR code is also being considered for a driver’s license control card instead of the current chip to make it more counterfeit-resistant. I don’t think anyone would mind that, it’s rather surprising that it’s not commonplace in 2023 and I have wallets full of plastic cards.

From the age of 70: driving fitness checks

A much-discussed change here as well will be regular, five-yearly check-ups of seniors at the age of 70. This is already the practice in some EU countries. According to the draft directive, all Member States must limit driving licenses for people aged 70 to a maximum of 5 years. This facilitates the introduction of proficiency checks or refresher courses in all Member States. The driver’s license must then be regularly exchanged in old age. It is not yet clear whether and to what extent this will be implemented in our country, and what such control might look like.

“Test driver” is already approved in the Czech Republic, but what is new is that the framework conditions for accompanied driving are to be standardized and recognized throughout the EU. Then an escorted ride would be possible across national borders. A pan-European standardized one is also to be introduced probationary period of 2 years. In other words, if a young driver wants to try driving on European roads, or “offer” a part of the trip during a family vacation to Croatia, he will now have the option and no one will sanction him within the EU.

Upcoming changes to driver’s licenses for 2023

Driving vehicles weighing 4.25 tons with class B license Recognition of B96 license also abroad Digital driver’s license and QR code Withdrawal of driver’s license: EU-wide recognition “Probationary driver” from 17 years, accompanied driving and uniform probationary period From 70 years of driving test age

In addition, the situation in Europe should be more uniform for drivers who have lost their driving license. ADAC informs that the driving ban imposed in Italy will also apply in Germany. In addition, a uniform limit is to be introduced on alcohol and drug consumption in individual countries. The latter is something that we can only acknowledge with gratitude, the differences between individual countries (often by half a million) forced drivers to constantly find out where they can have a beer after lunch on vacation, and where they can’t.

How do you see the new EU regulations? Let us know in the discussion below the article, thank you!
