For some time, we have been wondering if LeBron James’ association with the Looney Tunes in Space Jam: New Era would live up to the expectations raised by the first Space Jam, and we can finally meet it. The original starring Michael Jordan didn’t exactly break box office records, but decades later it’s still revered by fans as a cult classic of the 1990s.
The idea of putting NBA legend Michael Jordan on a basketball court with animated characters from the world of Looney Tunes turned out to be an innovative concept that was overwhelmingly well received by audiences. For years, there has been talk of picking up the idea behind the film, and while a sequel with Jordan never materialized, Warner Bros. finally has a second Space Jam movie. But in Jordan’s place, it’s his rival in the world title debate, LeBron James, who stars alongside Bugs Bunny and the gang.
With Space Jam 2, Warner Bros. had promised to offer something totally new with this sequel, and not just the CGI look of the Tunes. Unlike the movie starring Michael Jordan, New Era goes far beyond the world of Looney Tunes to encompass countless Warner Bros. library franchises, allowing iconic characters like King Kong, Fred Flintstone, Batman & Robin and Iron Giant to watch the game as members of the public. Even obscure names like Space Ghost, Peter Potamus, and Jabberjaw were in the crowd. Plus, the Tunes had to travel to different Warner Bros. universes, like Austin Powers, Game of Thrones, and even Casablanca. It was a unique direction to take, but did it help Space Jam: New Era to be a better movie than its predecessor?
Team Michael Jordan vs. Team LeBron James
As a movie, Space Jam: New Era obviously can’t resolve the basketball debate between Michael Jordan and LeBron James, but it did manage to create a new argument: which of the two is the better actor? James won’t win an Oscar for his role, but he showed at least some degree of emotional depth as an actor in his performance, especially in the scenes with his character’s son, Dom (Cedric Joe). Michael Jordan didn’t have the same opportunities, given that his goal in Space Jam was less personal and more to help the Tunes and NBA players. But, he too has shown himself capable of carrying a film like Space Jam. As with the more general debate about their basketball skills, there is no clear answer here.
Are Looney Tunes Better in the Original or New Era?
Among the best features of the two Space Jam movies are the Looney Tunes themselves. The 1996 film memorably evoked classic versions of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and all the rest, with each character looking and sounding like the Tunes with the voice of Mel Blanc that fans remember in the shorts. In this area, Space Jam: New Era meets the expectations of the original. The sequel was able to do some fun and new things with the characters, like Speedy Gonzalez who uses his speed to dodge bullets like Neo from The Matrix, Granny who uses martial arts, Porky Pig who raps, and Wile E. Coyote who succeeds. to operate one of its ACME machines. But at the same time, Space Jam 2 has managed to stay true to the identity of the characters.

One of the main differences between the Tunes approach in the movies is the number of characters used. The Space Jam Tunes team had a much larger number of characters, many of which were Tunes that didn’t make it into the sequel. While it would have been good to see familiar faces like Beaky Buzzard and Barnyard Dog on the pitch again, it made sense for Space Jam 2 to focus on a team of just 14 basketball players. Space Jam 2 defined the characters that would be part of its squad before the game began with a proper recruiting process, which the first movie didn’t really do. This made it possible to exclude certain characters, but also to highlight all the members of the new Bugs team.
Are we more Monstars or Goon Squad?
The Space Jam Monstars and the New Age Goon Squad all had their own personalities, but the Monstars were the most developed. At the end of the story, they were finally able to regain their freedom, but also had to give up their new powers. The Goon Squad, on the other hand, was less essential to the story and was not as brutal or threatening as the Monstars, which inspired fear in the original members of the Tune Squad. One thing the Goon Squad had in its favor was its capabilities. Unlike the Monstars, each player in the Goon Squad could be distinguished from the others by his powers and what he brought to the table. This is something the Monstars lacked.
The story of Space Jam versus that of Space Jam 2
The Space Jam films have used contrasting explanations to explain the fusion between real life and the world of Looney Tunes. In the 1996 film, Michael Jordan found himself sucked into an underworld where he learned that Bugs Bunny and his friends were real and that their home was threatened by aliens. New Era took a different direction with Server-verse, a concept that established Looney Tunes and the other worlds of Warner Bros. exist in a virtual reality belonging to the studio. In summary, Space Jam: New Era isn’t a bad movie, but it’s unlikely to become a classic like the one starring Michael Jordan.
