The Volvo, Polestar and Lotus brands owned by the Geely holding, as well as the JLR company (formerly Jaguar Land Rover) have formed a new alliance in China – Shanchong (Swift Charge, or “fast charging”). Its goal will be to work together on technologies for charging batteries of electric vehicles, writes Automotive News Europe.
Polestar said that the four participants in this association will share resources and jointly develop innovative solutions to replenish the energy reserves of electric cars. In addition, the partners intend to introduce a new charging standard for luxury models.
One such alliance already formed in China last month. Local units of two leading German automakers – Mercedes-Benz Group China and BMW Brilliance Automotive – have agreed to jointly create a network of charging stations. It is understood that future clients will be offered premium service.
Tesla’s own charging standard, the North American Charging Standard (NACS), is currently being actively promoted by Tesla. As of December 2023, Ford, General Motors, Volkswagen Group, Mercedes-Benz, BMW Group, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, JLR, Volvo Cars, Polestar, as well as startups like Lucid Motors and Fisker have already agreed to switch to it.
They will begin equipping their vehicles intended for the North American market with the appropriate ports in 2025. At the same time, already in 2024, an adapter will be released for existing models that will allow them to “refuel” at branded Tesla Supercharger stations.
