New educational plan for early childhood education in Brandenburg

The cross-age educational plan applies to crèches, kindergartens, day-care centers and child day care and offers practical suggestions for the pedagogical design of everyday situations and for linking them to various educational areas. It replaces the “Principles of Elementary Education” that have been in force since 2004.

Frauke Hildebrandt, Professor of Childhood Education, emphasises: “In order for educational opportunities in the future to be less determined by social background, it is important to support the development of our children’s skills even better. The new Brandenburg education plan is geared towards what is really needed in practice and therefore addresses typical everyday situations. This was particularly important to our authors in view of the current challenges in childcare and has been confirmed by a positive response from professional practice.”

On the one hand, the curriculum describes everyday educational situations such as playing, eating, hygiene, children’s circles or tidying up, and on the other hand, classic educational areas such as language, mathematics, movement or aesthetics.

In 2022, the MBJS commissioned the Institute for Further Education, Research and Development eV (IFFE) at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the German League for the Child to draw up the new educational plan. Under the leadership of Frauke Hildebrandt and Bianka Pergande, a diverse team of scientific authors developed the draft, which was presented in August 2023. In February 2024, the MBJS launched a comprehensive participation process with daycare stakeholders in Brandenburg, which included 22 events and an online survey with almost 2,000 participants. The constructive comments from this process were incorporated into the final version of the educational plan.

To implement the new plan, the Berlin-Brandenburg Social Pedagogical Training Institute (SFBB) will launch a comprehensive training campaign for educators and daycare providers. In addition, the content of the educational plan will be taught in all SFBB training courses and in the technical schools for educators.
