During its standing committee on Monday, November 6, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region registered a subsidy of 1,186,000 euros for the construction of an educational and administrative building, of approximately 775 m², the construction of an additional gymnasium of the type C (team sports room, equipped with a climbing wall and a dance and combat room), a swimming pool, an athletics area (track, jumping and throwing area) and finally an outdoor field for football and rugby.
Lack of infrastructure
The news was received with satisfaction within the teaching team of the Staps Apas license (health-adapted physical activities). “But at this stage, we don’t know any more,” confides Gautier Zunkin, deputy director of the Staps license. We do not yet have our own premises. And for the gymnasium, that of Florida, in Bayonne, is still unavailable. We go to Bayonne or Anglet, depending on the availability of other gyms. »
Conditions which are not ideal for the 190 current students and which do not facilitate the development of the sector, for which the establishment of a master’s degree is nevertheless planned for the start of the 2026 school year.
But the final decisions depend on the Basque Country Urban Community, the project manager for this project, and the SSH college (Social Sciences and Humanities) whose headquarters is within the UPPA and to which the Staps license is attached.
It seems, at this stage, that on the Basque Country Agglomeration side, no decision has been taken regarding the future establishment of this sports campus. Two other sites are envisaged, besides Montaury.
First in France
This file is in no way linked to that of the zone Arkinova which has raised the protest of associations like Anglet heritage, which denounce attacks on wooded areas and wetlands, even if the local urban plan authorizes higher education establishments in these areas.
An event reinforced the presence of the Staps license in Anglet. The doctoral thesis defense, Friday November 17, of Charlie Nezondet. He was recognized as a Doctor by developing his thesis on the theme “Interest of Physical Literacy (1) for adolescents who are overweight and obese”.
“A theme that has never been addressed in France as part of a thesis. For us, it’s very rewarding,” says Gautier Zunkin. After completing his university studies in Rennes and then in Nice, Charlie Nezondet was able to complete his 3rd cycle course at home and present his thesis in front of his loved ones, thanks to the presence of the Staps license in Anglet and the Center hospitalier de la Côte Basque, in Bayonne, where he will continue to pursue his research.
