New Editor-in-Chief Appointed for Jesuit Journal, Civilization of the Catholic Church

Father Xi Andong resigned after leading this Jesuit journal for 12 years. Father Goncalves will take over as editor-in-chief on October 1.

(Vatican News) The leadership of the Jesuit journal “Civilization of the Catholic Church” has changed. Father Antonio Spadaro, who has been the editor-in-chief for the past 12 years, was appointed by the Pope as Deputy Secretary-General of the Holy See’s Ministry of Culture and Education on September 14. Father Xi Andong will be replaced by Father Nuno da Silva Gonçalves, who was appointed by Father Arturo Sosa Abascal, President of the Society of Jesus on the same day, and will take up his new post on October 1.

After being appointed, Father Gonsalves expressed his willingness to “provide a message of hope to everyone, strive to interpret today’s world from a Christian perspective, and focus on the future.”

Father Xi Andong wrote in an article to be published in Catholic Civilization on Saturday: “I leave my job with gratitude for this experience, and I am happy to pass on the baton. At the same time, I am also very grateful for this passionate work. There is a sense of nostalgia for it, which allowed me to spend some wonderful years and develop a deep friendship with the editorial staff and the more than 200 Jesuit brothers around the world who worked hard to make Catholic Civilization a truly unique journal.”
