A new park opened in Upper Manhattan and has an idyllic location on the banks of the East River, with views of skyscrapers, Roosevelt Island, its cable car and the Queensboro Bridge: it is called the East Midtown Greenway.
The first phase of the East Midtown Waterfront Esplanade and East River Greenway project is finally complete after four yearspromising more room to breathe, run, walk and bike over the river: it’s nine blocks from East 53rd to 61st streets. It is an extension of the renewed Andrew Haswell Green Park, originally announced in 2008.
“Retro-looking benches are hidden between small niches of a corrugated concrete planter and a walking path runs parallel to the river. Behind the 20-foot-wide walking path, plantings and benches is a 20-foot-wide bike lane to keep pedestrians and cyclists separated. Above the park to the west is the FDR. In the first phase of the new East Midtown Greenway park in Manhattan Access is free on East 53rd St. and 61st St., facing the river.
In parallel, Andrew Haswell Green Park received a complete update, with new grass, as well as renovations to the ramp, lighting and seating, he noted. Daily News.
